These cloud worksheets and this post should help you begin teaching your children about the different types of clouds.

The types of clouds are classified by their shape and their altitude in the sky. As the sun heats these water and ice particles, they turn into an invisible gas called water vapor, also known as evaporation. Temperatures cool at higher altitudes and so does the water vapor as it rises. Eventually, it becomes cool enough to become water again and it forms a cloud. Clouds are warmer than the air around them so they are able to float because warm air is lighter than cool air. The clouds are warmer because as the water vapor cools and turns back into water droplets, it releases a small amount of heat.

The main types of clouds live in the lowest part of the atmosphere, closest to the ground. This area is called the troposphere. The stratosphere is in the middle, just above the troposphere. After the stratosphere comes the mesosphere, the thermosphere, and finally the exosphere as you go further up in the sky. Different types of clouds appear to be different shapes, and even colors, from each other. You can read this fun cloud book to your kids as well. Cumulus These are the balls of cotton you see on clear, usually sunny, days.

They have rounded, puffy tops with flat, sometimes dark, bottoms, and they are bright white when lit by the sun. They usually indicate good weather, but beware, they can quickly turn into a thunderstorm under the right conditions. StratusThese clouds usually sit low in the sky, hiding the clouds above them.

The Three Main Types of Clouds

They are flat and grey, sometimes bringing a slight drizzle. Fog is simply stratus clouds which have come down to ground level. Stratocumulus Stratocumulus is a sort of combination of a cumulus cloud and a stratus cloud. As stratus clouds break apart, they start to form cumulus clouds.

And as cumulus clouds cling together, they become stratus clouds. The time in between the formation of a cumulus cloud or a stratus cloud is called a stratocumulus cloud. These clouds are low, puffy, and either grey or white and they will have patches of blue sky between them. From underneath, they look a little like a honeycomb. He loved learning about the four types of clouds but I thought a fun worksheet would be the best thing to help explain them better.

So I put him down for his nap and told him I would have something fun for him when he woke up. Since my son is three, I decided to incorporate some of the things he has been learning. It was a fun change from his workbooks and since he has a brain for science, it was right up his ally.

From his Essay of the Modifications of Clouds Luke Howard divided clouds into three categories; cirrus, cumulus and stratus. The actual division between these regions varies from day to day and season to season. One effect of these cores of strong wind is the maximum altitude of the tropopause decreases in each region as one moves from the equator to the poles. Generally, as the tropopause's height decreases, the elevations at which clouds occur also decreases. The exception is for low clouds which are officially said to have cloud bases within the first 6, feet 2, meters of the surface in each region.

But even that is not always the case. The base of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds can sometimes be higher than 6, feet 2, meters.

During summertime, the base of these convective clouds will be well in to the mid-level cloud range in the non-mountainous areas of the southwest United States.

Cumulus cloud bases have been observed up to 9, feet 2, meters over North Central Texas and thunderstorms, with cloud bases from 11, to 12, feet 3, to 3, metershave occurred near San Angelo, Texas. This happens when, despite the dry lower level of the atmosphere, the atmosphere in the mid-levels is fairly moist and unstable. The dryness of the lower level is such that parcels of air need to rise up to two miles 3 kmand sometimes more, before the they cool to the point of condensation. Since the jet stream follows the sun, it shifts toward the equator as winter progresses.

Therefore, the polar region expands and the temperate region moves toward the equator. In summer, the Tropical Region expands shifting the temperate region toward the poles while the polar region shrinks.

Please Contact Us. The Four Core Types of Clouds While clouds appear in infinite shapes and sizes they fall into some basic forms. Cirro-form The Latin word 'cirro' means curl of hair.

Composed of ice crystals, cirro-form clouds are whitish and hair-like. There are the high, wispy clouds to first appear in advance of a low-pressure area such as a mid-latitude storm system or a tropical system such as a hurricane.

Cumulo-form Generally detached clouds, they look like white fluffy cotton balls. They show vertical motion or thermal uplift of air taking place in the atmosphere. They are usually dense in appearance with sharp outlines. The base of cumulus clouds are generally flat and occurs at the altitude where the moisture in rising air condenses.

Strato-form From the Latin word for 'layer' these clouds are usually broad and fairly wide spread appearing like a blanket. They result from non-convective rising air and tend to occur along and to the north of warm fronts. The edges of strato-form clouds are diffuse. He called this cloud, ' Nimbus ', the Latin word for rain. The vast majority of precipitation occurs from nimbo-form clouds and therefore these clouds have the greatest vertical height.

How Do Clouds Form? The sky can be full of water. But most of the time you can't see the water. The drops of water are too small to see. They have turned into a gas called water vapor. As the water vapor goes higher in the sky, the air gets cooler. The cooler air causes the water droplets to start to stick to things like bits of dust, ice or sea salt. What Are Some Types of Clouds? Clouds get their names in two ways. One way is by where they are found in the sky.

Some clouds are high up in the sky. Low clouds form closer to Earth's surface. In fact, low clouds can even touch the ground.

These clouds are called fog. Middle clouds are found between low and high clouds. All rights reserved. Privacy Statement and Disclaimer Notice. Search for Resources. Cloud in a Jar. Cloud Template. All About Clouds.
